What the Live Prices Actually Say

Hard drives are the one product where the headline price tells you almost nothing. A 1TB drive at £86 looks cheaper than an 8TB at £254, right up until you work out that the first costs £86 for a terabyte and the second costs £32. Buy on cost per terabyte or you will pay several times over for the privilege of a smaller number at the checkout. That calculation is also moving faster than usual. We track live UK prices across the drives on this site, and in the eleven days to 4 August 2026 the Seagate BarraCuda 4TB went from £88 to £204 — the same drive, more than double, inside a fortnight. Anything you read about hard drive value written more than a few weeks ago is probably quoting numbers that no longer exist. Including, as it happens, our own earlier draft of this article.

The short answer

Based on live UK prices on 4 August 2026:

  • Best value overall: Seagate BarraCuda 8TB at around £254, working out at £32 per terabyte — the cheapest terabytes of any internal drive we track.
  • Best big-capacity drive: Seagate IronWolf Pro 16TB at about £560, or £35 per terabyte, with a workload rating built for drives that never stop.
  • Best for a home NAS: WD Red Plus 6TB at roughly £238, £40 per terabyte, and genuinely CMR rather than SMR.

What a terabyte actually costs right now

Ranked by cost per terabyte, cheapest first, from live prices:

  • Seagate BarraCuda 8TB — about £254, roughly £32/TB
  • Seagate IronWolf Pro 16TB — about £560, roughly £35/TB
  • WD Red Plus 6TB — about £238, roughly £40/TB
  • Seagate BarraCuda 6TB — about £286, roughly £48/TB
  • Seagate BarraCuda 4TB — about £204, roughly £51/TB
  • Seagate BarraCuda 2TB — about £109, roughly £55/TB
  • WD Blue 2TB — about £121, roughly £60/TB

The number worth remembering: the 8TB BarraCuda gives you a terabyte for about £32, while the 1TB version of the same family costs around £86 per terabyte. Nearly three times more, for the same drive line, purely because it is smaller.

Note what that means for the usual advice. Six months ago the value sweet spot for desktop drives sat at 4TB. Today it has moved up to 8TB, because the 4TB has risen far more sharply than the 8TB has. The principle holds — buy bigger than feels necessary — but the specific capacity that wins keeps shifting, which is why a table in an article is worth less than checking on the day.

BarraCuda, IronWolf and WD Red — which family is for you

These three cover most of what UK buyers need, and choosing the right family matters far more than agonising over a specific model.

Seagate BarraCuda — the desktop workhorse

BarraCuda is Seagate's mainstream desktop drive, built for a single PC that runs for part of the day: games, media, downloads, general bulk. It is the cheapest way to add capacity to a tower, and at 8TB it is the value champion of everything here.

What it is not built for is spinning 24/7 inside a multi-drive enclosure. Keep it out of your NAS.

  • Buy it for: a desktop that needs cheap bulk space.
  • Skip it for: NAS, RAID, or anything always-on.

WD Red Plus — the sensible NAS default

Filling a two-to-four-bay NAS, Red Plus is the safe, boring, correct answer. The word "Plus" is doing real work: it means CMR recording, which handles the constant small writes and RAID rebuilds a NAS throws at a drive far better than the SMR used in some entry-level models.

  • Buy it for: home or small-office NAS, RAID arrays, always-on storage.
  • Look for: the word "Plus". Plain WD Red can be SMR.

Seagate IronWolf Pro — when you need more

IronWolf is Seagate's NAS line, and the Pro variant raises the workload rating, spindle speed and warranty for bigger or busier arrays. The 16TB Pro at £35 per terabyte is remarkable value for the capacity, and it means filling fewer bays.

The standard IronWolf 2TB works in a small two-bay box, but at £67 per terabyte it mostly demonstrates why small NAS drives are poor value.

  • Buy it for: larger NAS, media servers, drives that get hammered.

Does a hard drive still make sense in 2026

For bulk storage, yes, and the case has arguably strengthened. SSD prices remain elevated after a long stretch of NAND shortages, so the gap between a cheap terabyte of flash and a cheap terabyte of spinning disk is still wide. If what you need is somewhere to put a media library, years of photos or a backup target, a hard drive remains the cheapest way to do it.

Where hard drives no longer make sense is anything you actually wait for. Your operating system, your games, your working files: put those on an SSD. What to check before you buy

  • CMR or SMR. For NAS or RAID, insist on CMR. SMR drives can slow dramatically during rebuilds.
  • Warranty length. Three years is standard, five on Pro-tier drives, and it correlates with how hard the drive is rated to work.
  • Workload rating. Measured in terabytes written per year. Desktop drives are typically rated far lower than NAS drives, and exceeding it repeatedly is how drives die early.
  • Physical fit. Almost all of these are 3.5 inch, which needs a desktop bay. Laptops take 2.5 inch, and portable options are a different question — see external hard drives.
  • Noise. Larger, faster drives are audible. In a room where you work, that matters more than people expect.

How much capacity should you buy

More than you think, because the per-terabyte maths rewards it and because you will not want to do this again in a year.

For a desktop, 8TB is currently the value sweet spot. For a NAS, work out your total need and divide by the bays you are prepared to fill, then buy the largest drive that fits the budget rather than filling every slot with small ones. Fewer, bigger drives cost less per terabyte, use less power and leave you room to expand.

Below 4TB, hard drives stop making sense at all. The per-terabyte cost climbs steeply and you are better served by an SSD at those capacities.

The bottom line

Buy the 8TB BarraCuda if you want the cheapest terabytes in a desktop. Buy WD Red Plus if it is going in a NAS. Buy the IronWolf Pro 16TB if you need serious capacity per bay and the budget allows.

And check the price on the day. In the eleven days it took to get this article from draft to published, one of these drives more than doubled — which is the strongest argument we can make for looking at live numbers rather than trusting any list, this one included.
